1. Titiwangsa Lake Garden

Whenever anyone talks about a park in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, it will almost always be the KLCC Park. But if you’re not a fan of crowds or if you’ve been there one too many times, then the Titiwangsa Lake Garden may be just the right picnic spot you’re looking for.

The Titiwangsa Lake Garden is a popular public park in Kuala Lumpur which is known for its scenic lake, water display, well-maintained walking paths, and myriad of recreational activities that caters to all ages. Not only are the facilities well thought out, it also offers a stunning view of the city skyline with the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower as its backdrop.

Aside from picnics, families can rent paddle boats or enjoy a scenic boat ride on the lake, cycle, rollerblade, and let their kids run wild at the well-maintained playground. The playground is equipped with slides, fun climbing structures, and swings which are suitable for toddlers and bigger kids, while parents can enjoy the expansive outdoor gym equipment.

The park offers a number of picnic benches, tables, and gazebos scattered throughout but do note that they tend to fill up quickly on weekends, which is why I recommend going early to snag a picnic table so that you and your family can enjoy a more comfortable picnic. But when you’re preparing for your picnic, pack a picnic mat or two just in case spots are filled.

And not forgetting one of the most important things, toilet facilities. The public toilets at the Titiwangsa Lake Garden are typically in an acceptable condition, but do note that you’ll have to pay a small fee to access it - which also supports the maintenance and upkeep of the washrooms.

Opening Hours: 6:30am - 10:30am, Saturdays to Thursdays. Closed on Fridays.

Address: Jalan Kuantan, Titiwangsa, 53200 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

2. Perdana Botanical Garden

No good picnic listicle is complete without a mention of the Perdana Botanical Garden, formerly known as the Lake Gardens. The Perdana Botanical Garden is one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest and most scenic parks located just around the corner from the Parliament building and the national war memorial, Tugu Negara.

Even though it is the oldest, it is highly regarded by both locals and visitors as the green gem of Kuala Lumpur because of its large playground, lush greenery, tranquil water displays, and various themed gardens such as the famous Orchid Garden, Hibiscus Garden and the stunning Sunken Garden with its star-shaped fountain centrepiece.

Aside from the botanical attractions, the park also contains the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, Deer Park, and Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park where children can enjoy an interactive and educational experience with wildlife. If wildlife isn’t the family’s cup of tea, there is also a large sheltered structure where fun dance classes are held on weekends, the adjacent lawns where kids can enjoy games like frisbee, ball games, or to just run around freely.

There are picnic tables and benches found around the park but these can be limited during the weekends since it’s an incredibly popular family outing spot during weekends. As for shaded gazebos and sheltered structures, these are incredibly limited and located far apart from one another so I wouldn’t recommend planning your picnic around it.

But since there are plenty of lush lawns in the Perdana Botanical Garden, most families actually prefer to lay their own picnic mat in the park’s many shaded spots. It’s also worth noting that the large sheltered structure found in the centre of the park is not fully shaded from rain as the roof features a perforated motif where rain can easily flow through.

The park has well-maintained and clean public toilets but do note that you’d have to pay a small fee to access it (as of 2025 it was 20 cents). Parking is also not an issue here as those coming here by car can opt to park at the nearby multi-storey carpark. Just don’t forget to pack some wet tissues and mosquito repellent because the park can be a haven for insects!

Opening Hours: 7am - 7pm, daily.

3. Kanching Rainforest Waterfall

Did you think that parks were the only place for picnics? Think again! The Kanching Rainforest Waterfall found just outside of Kuala Lumpur is one of the best spots for outdoor-loving families to enjoy a picnic thanks to its renowned picturesque waterfalls, fresh air, dense forest canopies, and cooling waterfall pool.

This site boasts seven cascading waterfalls at various heights, which hikers typically challenge themselves to conquer for its different scenic views and experiences. But if you’re here with little ones, chances are that hiking won’t be on the itinerary unless they are hyper ones who enjoy a fun jungle adventure uphill. So rest assured that you won’t need to hike to enjoy the waterfall.

One of the best parts about picnicking here is how your little ones can have a splashing good time at the waterfall’s lower sections. That said, even though it’s shallow the pool’s depth may get a little deeper during rainy periods so you must keep an eye on them at all times.

The Kanching Rainforest Waterfall area offers limited picnic spots and seating areas by the waterfall’s lower tiers, but do bring your picnic mat, a foldable table, and some lightweight foldable chairs just in case they are occupied during the weekends. If you’re coming on the weekdays, it’s relatively quiet so you can easily take your pick from the rest huts to the picnic tables.

You can find toilet and shower facilities near the entrance to have your little ones wash up after splashing around in the waterfall’s pool. But do take note to bring your own toilet paper and wet wipes for a more comfortable experience as visitors have often reported that they aren’t replenished fast enough. There is also a gated entrance where visitors can park at a small fee so those coming by car won’t need to stress about parking in the vicinity.

Opening Hours: 8am - 5pm, daily.

4. Permaisuri Lake Garden (Taman Tasik Permaisuri)

Let’s take a quick break from the popular parks and pay a visit to the lesser known ones. The lovely Permaisuri Lake Garden - which directly translates to Queen’s Lake Garden - is a beautifully landscaped urban lake garden located in the Bandar Sri Permaisuri neighbourhood of Kuala Lumpur’s famous Cheras district.

Compared to the earlier mentioned parks, the Permaisuri Lake Garden is a serene and relatively quiet park that is regularly frequented by its surrounding residents and guests of the Komune Living & Wellness hotel just by one of the park’s entrances.

It features a man-made central lake with a section that is cordoned off for giant catfish where little ones can take part in feeding them, well-maintained lawns that families can lay their picnic mat on and lounge about, ample benches and concrete park tables, and colourful flower beds, making it one of the most picturesque neighbourhood parks in Kuala Lumpur.

There is also a children’s playground on-site that is equipped with slides, swings, and fun climbing structures to keep your little ones engaged as you kick back and relax with your partner or friends over your favourite thirst quenchers in the insulated OiYO Solo Travel Mug.

The one thing that makes it a great park for picnics is how there is easy access to food from all the park’s entrances. There’s a local Nasi Kandar shop by the nearby sports complex’s park entrance, and there’s also a food court located in the neighbouring hotel with various local and international cuisine where you can pack food and store it within your OiYO Lunch Bag to keep your picnic preps to a minimum.

5. KLCC Park (Kuala Lumpur City Centre Park)

I really can’t think of any local who doesn’t know about the KLCC Park. But that’s also the exact reason why this park is both hugely popular and underrated at the same time, as conflicting as that sounds. This iconic urban park is located at the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers and it was specially designed to serve as the city centre’s green lung amidst the bustling concrete jungle.

There are a few features that make this park a top favourite for families with little children. For starters, the Symphony Light and Sound Water Fountain show runs daily at 8pm at the park’s man-made Lake Symphony, making it a truly magical experience for little ones should you decide on an evening picnic.

Then there’s the knee-high wading pool and the many water features that surround it, making it a fun yet free way for your little ones to cool off amidst Malaysia’s humid tropical heat.

The park is also home to an extensive playground that is well-equipped with slides, climbing frames, swings, and see-saws so your children can have real fun away from the screens that they will remember for the years to come.

You’ll find ample benches along the park’s walking path along with the occasional gazebos where you can park your picnic essentials for a shaded picnic. Just note that these gazebos tend to fill up quickly throughout the week, so come early!

One particular saving grace about this park is that the Suria KLCC Mall is just right beside the park, so you and your family can make a quick dash to the mall for shelter if it rains unexpectedly or if it gets too hot. You’ll also have the a more comfortable option to utilise the mall's washrooms, especially when your little ones are in the picture.

Just don’t forget to pack swimwear for your little ones if you decide to have your picnic here! ;)

6. Gamuda Gardens Central Park

We’ve definitely not forgotten about the families with little ones AND furkids! Which is why we’ve scouted out the Gamuda Gardens Central Park as one of our top favourite picnic spots for a family picnic because it not only offers countless entertainment for kids, but it also serves as one of Malaysia’s rare dog-friendly parks!

It's a sprawling park located in Rawang that offers scenic lakes, a tranquil waterfront view, a small playground for little ones, and fun community events and markets during the weekends for a truly lively ambiance.

There is a mini waterpark on-site, a swimming pool that families can access with a small fee, and the option to rent e-bikes, bicycles, or a scooter to zip through the vast park. Not to mention there’s also a theme park complete with the exciting luge ride just outside the Gamuda Gardens Central Park that families with hyper kids who get bored easily can visit!

That said, it’s recently become one of the capital’s most popular parks even though it is located quite a distance from the city centre. So do plan to visit during weekdays or make your way there early during the weekends, say before 9am, so that you can enjoy the park’s peaceful nature with your little ones and furkid.

Opening Hours: 6am - 10pm, daily.

7. The Central Park, Desa ParkCity

The Central Park at Desa ParkCity, fondly known by locals as “DPC” is one of Malaysia’s rare dog-friendly parks that also comes with a scenic waterfront and an adjacent mall. The stunning lake is surrounded by broad pedestrian-friendly paths which are suitable for strollers and gentle walks with no inclines, making it a great spot for families of all ages, be it little ones or seniors.

It’s one of the rare parks in Kuala Lumpur that truly embody the spirit of community as it is located within the gated Desa ParkCity township, so expect the park’s regulars to not only be from the surrounding residences, but also visitors from all across the city.

You and your family can chill on picnic mats laid on the park’s expansive green lawns, as there are limited gazebos around the park for a family-sized sit down picnic. And while lounging around, your little ones can partake in a few rounds of Frisbee, ball games, or to simply run around with their furry buddies. On rare occasions, you can even spot dog owners teaching their furkids how to swim in the lake!

If you find that you don’t have the time nor energy to prepare a whole picnic meal, you won’t have to worry about it. DPC offers various options through its many on-site eateries which you can pack food from.

Opening Hours: 6am - 11pm, daily.
